Alright, so last night should have been the last night of me missing a game, or at least I hope it is. I haven't been able to watch a full game since October 28th, when they played against the Minnesota Wild. Why does it seem like I always have the long shift whenever there's a game on? I guess that's my fault, I didn't look at the game schedule before I signed up for shifts. But now that work is finished for a while, hopefully I will be able to post on a more regular basis. Unfortunately our show was pre-empted today, so here's another weekly round-up coming your way.
Caps beat the Lightning: What a game, and by that I mean what a third period, since that's the only one I actually watched. It was clear to me, even though I only watched one-third of the game, that Alex was the star. And when I say Alex, I mean Alexander Semin. He was everywhere. (Not to jinx it, but right now he's playing like someone who wants a contract extention...). Sporting a hat trick, Alex comes out of this game as the Caps best forward. He leads the team with 12 goals, and nearly as many assists. With this win over the bolts, the Caps extend their record to 12-4-0 overall, and are 8-1-0 at home.
"Mo"-vember: Okay, what is with all of this November stuff? I keep hearing phrases like "Mo"-vember, and "Bro"-vember. Well, whatever it is, this mustache nonsense needs to end; playoff beards make the guys look scraggly enough, so why do we need this mid-season? Someone please tell Karl Alzner to shave that hairy caterpillar off of his face.
No it's not a typo: They say the number to hit is 80. That's what all penalty units "should" aim to achieve, but right now about two-thirds of the NHL is at that benchmark. The Caps come in at number nine on the list of the top ten penalty killing teams in the league, with an 85.9% average. That's not too shabby. Especially if you think about the PK units from previous seasons.

Varlamov to Hershey
According to WashingtonCapitals.com, the Capitals have assigned G Semyon Varlamov to the Hershey Bears. Varly is 0-1-0 in two games with the Caps this season and has a .896 save percentage with a 2.91 GAA. He has been very injury plauged this season, missing 12 games, including the last eight games. Hopefully he can get healthy and rework his mechanics and come back to DC ready to play at a high level.

Told Ya
Okay so I know I haven't been on here to post in a while, the middle of the semester is always the hardest time to get other things done. The last time I posted almost every Caps fans was starting to worry. The offense, especially the power play, was non existent, and the boys in red, white and blue had just been embarrassed twice by Tim "Super Human" Thomas. Even the games the the Caps WERE winning were always very close.
But now, all is well.
Since then, the Caps have won 7 of 8, their only loss coming to Minnesota, the second game of a back-to-back in which the Caps had to travel from Washington to Minnesota overnight. They have also won 5 straight, including a great come from behind win last night against a gritty NY Rangers team in which the Caps did not hold a lead until Matt Hendricks' goal midway through the third period.
There have also been many other noteworthy accomplishments during this 8 game span. The Caps have outscored opponents 33-19. They have won two more overtime games against Atlanta and Philadelphia (they haven't lost in overtime this season) and won their first shoot out of the year against Toronto (hear Steve Kolbe's call of the shootout here: http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?intcmpid=nav-video-main). They pitched their first shutout of the season against division rival Carolina, and exposed Tim Thomas for 3 goals before he was pulled in a 5-3 Capitals victory. October's Rookie of the Month Michal Neuvirth continues to play like a seasoned veteran. He leads the entire NHL with 9 wins and is currently holding a 2.46 GAA and a .912 Save Percentage.
The Caps need to keep the momentum going with two games against a sizzling Tampa Bay team in the next two and a half weeks. In that time span, the Caps also face Atlanta and Buffalo each twice, as well as games against Philadelphia and New Jersey, two teams who will look to get back at the Caps after being beaten by them earlier in the year.
